  • An exciting opportunity has become available to join us as a Specialty Doctor for our brand new Acute Service based at Victoria House in Darlington, County Durham.


    Cygnet Victoria House is an acute hospital for up to 25 men. It provides state-of-the-art facilities and a multi-disciplinary treatment programme designed to assist service users in their recovery.

    The Opportunity:


    As a Specialty Doctor you will have medical responsibility for up to 8 patients within our new Acute Service, whilst working closely with the Consultant Psychiatrist based at Victoria House.


    You will oversee patient admissions and discharges onto the ward and conduct immediate assessment and examinations.


    Initiate treatment plans using the care programme approach and ensure good medical practice within the MDT setting. You will prescribe and review medication under the supervision of the relevant Consultant Psychiatrist.


    To be responsible for the completion of necessary CPA, Managers Panels and Mental Health Tribunal reports in conjunction with the Consultant Psychiatrist. Also, to undertake clinical audits and ensure standards of care are maintained and monitored.


    To participate in the 1 in 6 on call rota with enhanced payments for evenings and weekend work.


    We Are Looking For People Who Have:


    • Full GMC registration along with post registration experience
    • Relevant experience within a similar setting and working with adults aged 18+
    • The ability to interview and assess patients whilst making informed decisions in reference to appropriate treatment options
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear comprehensive medical notes
    • Excellent knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice along with Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity
    • Up to date record of Continued Professional Development (CPD)
    • The ability to work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team
    • Desirable: MRCPsych or equivalent
    • We also require the successful candidate to live within a reasonable commutable distance of the service in order to respond efficiently and effectively to on call requirements.

      • You will get support with the MRCPsych exams.
    • Salary: up to £90k (depending on experience)

  • Location Information
  • Cygnet Victoria House is a 14 bed acute mental health inpatient service for men. The service provides a safe and stabilising environment for men who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission.

    The ethos of our service is about assessing and treating service users in the least restrictive environment and planning for discharge in a robust and timely fashion. With a focus on stabilisation, we will support service users to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community.


    This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
