  • Are you a Speech and Language Therapist with an interest in working with adults with autism?

This is an exciting opportunity where the successful applicant will work across two of our purpose-built residential Cygnet Adults with Autism Services (AdAS) based in the Southampton area: The Squirrels and Devon Lodge. Both homes are easily accessible as they are within short range of the M27.

Both The Squirrels and Devon Lodge provide specialist care and support for up to 9 and 12 individuals with autism and challenging behaviours, respectively.

Our residences strive to deliver a safe and effective service to those individuals in our care, promoting independence and community integration. Person-centred planning - based on the specific needs of the individuals - is at the heart of everything we do. Residents can build upon earlier learnt skills to achieve further independence, self-advocacy and confidence, leading to a greater quality of life.

    The Opportunity...

As a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), your role will be integral to ensuring individuals maximise their potential and enable them to enjoy the best possible quality of life through the delivery of an evidence-based on-site SLT service. You will:

Assess communication needs, implementing and developing specialist SLT programmes according to individuals’ diagnoses and identified needs.
Promote effective functional communication and social skills development by working directly with the residents and by modelling and delivering training to staff.
Optimise the application of a total communication approach through the development of the environment.
Set SMART targets and use appropriate outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
Deliver integrated interventions through routine collaboration with the interdisciplinary team comprised of Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Psychiatry.

In addition to this, you will provide supervision to a Band 5 Speech & Language Therapist working in the remaining 3 AdAS South residences.

The Cygnet SLT service is well establish, with 45 SLTs working nationwide and as such, you will have access to an immediate peer network to support on-going CPD. There are frequent opportunities to work on service development within the SLT service; this year is focusing on marking the 75th Anniversary of RCSLT.

A post-graduate qualification in the management of dysphagia is desirable but we will provide you with accredited training if this is an area identified for your personal development.

    You will have...

A degree / postgraduate diploma (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy along with HCPC Registration
Membership of the RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists) or equivalent
Experience as a Senior / Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Band 6 equivalent) or Highly Specialist (Band 7) equivalent
Experience working with a client population who presents with a diagnosis of Autism (ASD) / Learning Disability, along with complex needs and challenging behaviour is essential
    Experience in managing dysphagia (desirable)
The ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
Excellent communication / time management skills

    Why Cygnet? We'll offer you...

    Salary: £19,905pa
    Company pension scheme
    NHS and employee discount scheme
    Free meals
    Free parking
Internal / external CPD and research opportunities
Expert clinical supervision from the Deputy Head of Speech & Language Therapy and peer support
Opportunities for further training, broaden experience and enhance service development

Contracted Hours: 24 hours between Monday to Friday. We will consider applications from those seeking flexible working arrangements.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS and reference check and an offer of employment will be subject to successful clearance.
