    We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical or forensic psychologist to join our thriving and supportive Psychology department at Cygnet Hospital Bierley. You will be appointed at the equivalent of an NHS band 7. Full and part-time hours are available.  

    Cygnet Hospital Bierley cares for up to 61 people presenting with a range of complex mental health difficulties. Services are provided to our NHS partners, and delivered under the umbrella of a recovery approach.


    The successful candidate will have opportunities to work across four different wards:

    • Specialist female personality disorder & Dialectical Behaviour Therapy service
    • Low secure male ward
    • Low secure female ward
    • Female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)


    The Opportunity…

    You will input into at least two, if not all four of the hospital’s wards, depending on your areas of interest and service needs. The work will be stimulating, exposing you to a variety of clinical presentations, while allowing you to engage in the full breadth of activities comprising a psychologist’s role, including:


    • Psychological assessments including structured risk / personality assessments
    • Psychological therapy with individuals
    • Psychological therapy with groups
    • Consultation to teams
    • Provision of training and supervision
    • Service evaluation and clinical research, including dissemination of outcomes via conference presentations and publications


    You will join an innovative, dynamic and very supportive psychology team comprising a Head of Psychology (Clinical), four Psychologists (3 x Clinical, 1 x Forensic), and two Assistant Psychologists. The skillset within the team includes post-qualification training in CBT, CAT, EMDR, Schema therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. You will have access to individual, group and peer supervision, and will be supported to develop your own psychotherapeutic expertise. The Psychology team is committed to providing our service users with evidence-based care, to the highest of standards.   We regularly evaluate our work and present outcomes at conferences and peer-reviewed journals.


    Professional development is strongly encouraged. We have a generous training budget and the successful candidate may be supported to undertake intensive DBT training, with a view to contributing to our comprehensive DBT programme. You will also be supported to undertake further training appropriate to your role e.g. forensic risk assessment. 

    You will have…

    • A Doctorate Level Qualification (or equivalent) in Clinical / Forensic Psychology along with HCPC Registration
    • Experience of working with a variety of adult client groups, ideally within mental health
    • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of people with a wide range of mental health conditions, of varying severity and complexity
    • You will have an interest in working with people with a range of complex and co-occurring mental health needs, and have a positive approach to working with people presenting with a range of difficulties including: psychosis, emotionally unstable personality traits; deliberate self-harm; physical and verbal aggression; history of sexual offending; drug and alcohol problems.
    • Knowledge of psychological assessment and formulation in healthcare, as well as planning and delivering psychological interventions
    • Experience of various psychological therapies/models and risk assessments
    • Training and supervision experience is desirable
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team

    Contracted hours: 18.75 per week
