    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join a full MDT delivering care to Older Adults at Cygnet Hospital Taunton.

    The Older Adults service
    delivers high quality, person-centred inpatient care to men women with mental health needs. The service provides support to men and women (Mulberry and Swift wards, respectively) who require a short stay or are experiencing a period of acute relapse and need an appropriate environment and specialist input with the aim of supporting individuals to move to the least restrictive environment as soon as possible.

    Nightingale Ward offers a pre-discharge rehabilitation pathway where individuals can focus on developing or maintaining skills to optimise independence.  The over-arching aim of the Older Adults service is to support individuals with complex needs in returning to the community by working with carers, nursing homes or other community providers as well as providing guidance on physical health management.

    Job Role  

    The role involves working with individuals to maximise their potential and to enable them to enjoy the best possible quality of life via the delivery of an evidence-based SLT service. You will be working directly with patients to assess their communication and swallowing needs, providing tailored therapeutic input and management plans that formulate part of their wider care pathway from admission to discharge.  You will promote the use of effective functional communication, collaborative working and an inclusive communication environment.  Dysphagia experience - including the ability to independently manage complex dysphagia cases - is essential. The successful applicant will be responsible for embedding the SLT service under the guidance of the Head of SLT.

    Full induction training is given and you will receive clinical supervision through the Deputy Head of SLT as well as operational supervision and line management from the Hospital’s Clinical Manager.

    We are looking for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist with:

    • Experience in the field of Adults and / or Older Adults with Mental Health conditions, including working knowledge / understanding of inpatient services
    • Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support and person-centred planning
    • Knowledge of key national drivers for inpatient services such as RCSLT’s Five Good Communication Standards
    • Qualification and experience in dysphagia management
    • Evidence of being a strong team player with a genuine desire to help others
    • Good organisational and project management skills
    • Ability to work flexibly and reinforce the role of SLT on the wards
    • Enthusiasm, motivation and passion

    You must be a Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered SLT.  Please note: successful candidates will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
